Gospel Music Channel’s Mixer

Network Adds Scripted, Reality Programming To Lineup

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 6/16/2008 5:47:00 AM

Gospel Music Channel will sing a slightly different tune in the upcoming months as it adds comedy, reality and drama content to its lineup of gospel-tinged music video, concert and awards shows.

As part of its 2008-09 programming slate, the 40 million-subscriber network — which will become a Nielsen Media Research-rated network this fall — will debut Comedy Quickies!, a short-form comedy series highlighting several Christian comedians on the comedy circuit, in the third quarter of 2008. The family friendly standup sketches and clips will run throughout the network's daily schedule.

On the reality side, the network this winter will launch Revolve!, which will follow top rock, pop and hip-hop artists as they embark on the popular Revolve Tour bus to major teen-targeted summer music festivals. The series will follow the exploits of the groups and the drama that takes place while traveling on the road, according to network officials.

In 2009, GMC will premiere Gospel Playhouse, its first original scripted, musical dramedy series created by gospel playwright and actor J.D. Lawrence.

Overall, the network's new schedule will feature 75% original programming, an increase of more than 25%.

“We have an unwavering commitment to producing the highest quality, family-friendly original programming that always inspires, uplifts and entertains,” GMC vice chairman Brad Siegel said in a statement.

Other specials and series in development include Four!, a musical series featuring America's greatest quartets; Robert Randolph & Friends All Star Gospel Jam, a concert performance showcasing the veteran guitarist; and Celebrate Freedom, offering exclusive coverage of the popular Christian/gospel outdoor concerts in America.

The network will also return several series, including its gospel music-competition series Gospel Dream 2008; gospel artists profile series Front Row Live and Faith and Fame; as well as coverage of award shows such as the Gospel Music Channel Video Awards, BMI Trailblazer Awards and the GMA 40th Annual Dove Awards.
